Lubbock Bishop Blesses KVIO
Lubbock, Jan 15 (CRU)— Bishop Plácido Rodríguez of Lubbock, Texas, who reportedly many years ago was hostile to Catholic radio, has officially launched KVIO-LP Our Lady of Victory Radio there by blessing the studios. The station is owned by the Lubbock Catholic Medical Association and returns Catholic radio to this Texas Panhandle university city after an absence of nine years. Previously, a group of fervent Catholics had been leasing KLFB 1420 AM for four years but were forced to abandon their effort after the owner repeatedly raised the rent.
Previous to the event, KCBD-TV Channel 5 and EverythingLubbock.com carried the story in the form of a diocesan press release dated January 13th:
Diocese of Lubbock Catholics can claim a victory on radio airwaves. KVIO 102.9 FM, Our Lady of
Victory Radio began broadcasting in Lubbock in December.
Most Rev. Plácido Rodríguez, CMF, Bishop of Lubbock, will welcome the return of Catholic radio to the
airwaves in Lubbock with a blessing and information session at the Catholic Renewal Center at 4620 Fourth Street in Lubbock.
Those interested in Catholic radio and possibly supporting or volunteering for Victory Radio are invited to the reception on January 13, at 6:30 p.m.
Victory Radio will welcome speaker Tim Staples, Director of Apologetics and Evangelization at Catholic Answers, and frequent contributor to Catholic Answers Live on EWTN
Radio.
The return of Catholic radio in Lubbock was led by the Catholic Medical Association of Lubbock. According to Dr. Metzler, the return of Catholic radio to the Lubbock airwaves began in February 2012.
“Some members of the Catholic Medical Association of Lubbock had the opportunity to listen to EWTN Catholic radio in other towns and it had a wonderful impact on them,” Metzler said. “We emailed EWTN and applied for an educational FM broadcast license with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).”
Metzler said support for Our Lady of Victory Radio may be provided by volunteering, through prayer, and monetary support.
“Victory Radio will work with the bishop in a practical sense to help disperse information and announcements, and hopefully give him an opportunity to educate the people of Lubbock,” Dr. Metzler
said. “The people of Lubbock can help by praying for the success of Our Lady of Victory Radio and the New Evangelization in general. A major goal of the station is to be a good steward of limited resources and keep costs to a minimum.”
During the evening, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about Catholic Radio in Lubbock,
to volunteer for Victory Radio and to pledge monetary support for the radio station. All donations are tax
deductible.
Individual supporters and businesses will also have the opportunity to learn how to support the station
